Hi Amber,

Unfortunately a caravan would not be considered a first time home - not sure what you mean by cabin - I am assuming that if you are looking to purchase a cabin it is on a block of land that would also be part of the purchase - in this instance you may be eligible for the First Home Owners Grant which is currently $7000. The $10,000 Building Boost is only available to brand new homes that have never been lived in and you have signed a contract to purchase the property on or after the 1st of August 2011 up until 31st January 2012 or sign a contract to build between these two dates.

Hi Desley,

If the house is a brand new home and has never been lived in then you may be eligible for the Grant. If it is brand new I am assuming that you did not enter into a contract to build the home. If you did then the contract to build would need to have been dated on or after the 1st of August 2011

Just wondering if a cabin or caravan could be considered as a first time home and therefore get the $17,000 grant? I'm assuming probably not but, hey, just curious...

Although I think its great that the government is stepping up and providing new home builders with an extra bit of money, it also seems unfair for those like myself whom have purchased a pre owned property. The house i have purchased needs alot of work so I will be spending my entire first home owners grant on paying tradesmen/women to build/renovate. If the Government is willing to supply new home builders with a $10'000 boost as well as their $7000 1st home owners grant, why can't they further boost those who are purchasing a pre owned house for the first time?
If this is a bid to encourage and reward those for purchasing and building new homes to create jobs for others thats great, but why not have an incentive for those who have still managed to work hard and purchase a pre owned property during these hard times, especially if it their first home.......

Just an idea.....it would be great if first home owners recieved $7000 plus a seperate boost of government funded trade vouchers, or certain value so the home owners can only spend the extra amount on trades and or work for the house. The owners could even pay upfront and the government could reinburse the home owner? this way the money is kept in Australia and more work is created for our people?
